Schenectady
Schenectady is a city in Schenectady County, New York. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 66,135 making it the ninth-largest city in New York. The name “Schenectady” is derived from the Mohawk word skahnéhtati, meaning “beyond the pines”.
The first European settlers in Schenectady came from the Netherlands. Their ancestors were proud of their bravery and love of liberty. During the middle ages, the Netherlands were divided into feudal principalities, with chieftains pledging allegiance to French or German emperors. In the early sixteenth century, the country, which included Belgium and Holland, was home to two or three hundred walled cities. These cities thrived on commerce and manufacturing, and the city grew in size and prosperity.
The town’s history dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was inhabited by the Mohawk tribe of the Iroquois Confederacy. Dutch settlers named their settlement at Fort Orange, “Schau-naugh-ta-da,” meaning “over the pine plains.” Later, the Dutch changed the meaning of the word, changing it to mean “over the bend in the Mohawk River”. website
In the late 19th century, manufacturing jobs were lost in the area, and the population declined by nearly one-third during the 20th century. During this time, however, new industries came to the region. The town’s cotton mill became the center of operations for the Edison Machine Works in 1887. In 1892, General Electric Company’s headquarters moved to the area. This made Schenectady a major manufacturing center and a creative company.
