How Laser Vein Treatment Actually Works
Laser vein treatment relies on a principle called selective photothermolysis — targeted light energy that’s absorbed by a specific structure in the skin without needing to affect everything around it. In the case of spider and small varicose veins, the target is the blood inside the vessel. The laser’s wavelength is chosen because it’s preferentially absorbed by oxyhaemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying pigment in blood, which acts as the chromophore — the light-absorbing target the treatment is built around. That absorption generates heat inside the vessel, which damages the vein wall enough that the body’s own healing processes gradually clear the vessel over the weeks following treatment. Because the laser energy is tuned to target blood specifically, the goal of the mechanism is to concentrate that heat inside the vessel rather than spread it broadly through surrounding tissue — though, as with any energy-based treatment, individual response and side effects vary (see Honest Risks below).

It’s a well-established alternative to laser treatment, and for some vein types — particularly certain reticular veins or veins in locations less suited to laser — it can be a better fit than light-based treatment. Who Is a Good Candidate? (And Who Should Wait or See a Specialist)
Most people with cosmetic spider veins or small varicose veins are reasonable candidates for laser treatment, but a Vessel Assessment screens for factors that change the plan or point toward a different path:

Honest Risks: What to Actually Expect
Laser vein treatment carries real, ordinary risks that we’d rather state plainly than gloss over. Expect some discomfort during treatment, and commonly redness and mild swelling at the treatment site afterward. Bruising is common, especially on the legs. Temporary hyperpigmentation (darkening) or hypopigmentation (lightening) of the treated skin can occur and usually fades over time, though the timeline varies by skin tone and vein size. Blistering is uncommon but possible with larger or more superficial vessels. Less commonly, treatment can cause burns, crusting or erosion of the skin, scarring, deep-tissue injury, or prolonged wound healing — your provider will go over these possibilities and how they’re minimized as part of your Vessel Assessment. “Matting” — a fine web of new, tiny red vessels appearing near a treated area — is a recognized possibility with any energy-based vein treatment. And as noted above, new spider veins can form elsewhere over time; treating existing vessels doesn’t prevent new ones.
