Striae Rubrae vs. Striae Albae: Why Mark Age and Color Change the Plan
Not all stretch marks are the same clinical entity at the point you’re treating them. Striae rubrae are newer stretch marks — still red, purple, or pink because they retain active blood vessels close to the surface. Striae albae are older, mature stretch marks that have lost most of that blood supply and faded to white or silvery, with tissue that behaves more like scar tissue. This isn’t a reason to avoid treatment; it’s a factor that changes device settings, session spacing, and aftercare guidance, and it’s assessed directly at your consultation rather than assumed from a form. Who Is a Good Candidate? (And Who Should Wait)
Most people bothered by stretch marks on the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, breasts, or arms are reasonable candidates for a consultation, but several factors can delay treatment or change the plan:
- Active pregnancy — treatment is not performed on pregnant patients, and postpartum patients should be fully healed before starting
- An active skin infection at the treatment site
- A personal history of keloid scarring

- Active eczema, psoriasis, or another inflammatory skin condition at the treatment site

Being Honest About Downtime and Results
We won’t tell you this treatment is painless or that there’s no downtime — several competing practices in this market make exactly that kind of unqualified claim, and we don’t think it’s accurate. Expect some discomfort during treatment (managed with topical numbing), and expect redness, swelling, and pinpoint bleeding at the treatment site afterward; most patients are back to normal activity within a day or two, but the treated skin can stay sensitive longer.
