The Town Hall is located at 1100 Sunrise Boulevard and was named after Rotterdam, a Dutch city. The town was first settled in 1661, and the name was originally Bouwland, which meant “good land.” All land west of Bouwland was called Woestina. In 1820, Schenectady created Rotterdam Township from the third ward. By 1880, the town had about 2,300 residents.
The town is home to many small businesses. The main business is manufacturing. The town also has a thriving food industry. The city is known for its artisanal cheeses, as well as its ice cream. In the past, the town was an important part of the Mohawk Valley’s economic development. While it was relatively poor, it was still a center for trade and manufacturing. The community was able to survive on its own, mainly due to its centralized location.
In 1809, the lands that are now known as Rotterdam were part of the third ward of the city of Schenectady. However, the borough remained in the city of Schenectady. The council of aldermen decided to separate the third ward from the fourth. A petition was then drafted on December 31, 1819, and the state legislature passed the legislation on April 14, 1820.
