What is microneedling?
If you love to wake up to glowing skin every morning, you definitely want to learn more about this revolutionary beauty treatment. Microneedling encourages your skin to create new collagen and elastin by using tiny needles to puncture the top layer of your skin. This treatment can rejuvenate the skin to help you look plump, smooth, supple, and healthy.
In addition to improving overall skin tone and pigmentation issues, microneedling can also reduce the appearance of acne scars, pore size, fine lines and wrinkles as well as stretch marks and deeper scarring. It can be combined with other treatments, like Laser Genesis, or SkinCeuticals serums to help those ingredients absorb more easily into the skin.
Microneedling is becoming so popular that there are several versions of the treatment, ranging from in-office treatments to at-home devices. Of course, as with any treatment that relies on devices that puncture the skin, you should take great care in figuring out what’s right for you, and that should include consulting a board-certified provider.
Is microneedling right for me?
Microneedling is safe for all skin tones and can help a variety of skin concerns ranging from an uneven complexion to acne scars or stretch marks.
“You know that gorgeous glow you get after a facial that only lasts a short while? This gives you that glow, and it lasts four to six weeks.” says Dr. Sheila Nazarian, a Beverly Hills, California plastic surgeon, in a RealSelf blog post.
“There is no skin type that doesn’t benefit from it,”
Your results won’t show up overnight. You may need multiple treatments to see a significant change depending on your skin type and concerns, and we normally recommend our patients buy the package of 4 visits to save some cash and get the best results!
What should I expect during a microneedling treatment? What is my recovery going to look like?
About an hour before treatment, we do have you apply a topical anesthetic to reduce discomfort during the treatment. The entire treatment typically takes an hour. After treatment, we do apply a hyaluronic acid and calming treatment to your skin to help with the redness. Your skin will feel tight like a sunburn. This is normal.
As for recovery, it should take about 48 hours to recover. The channels in the skin do stay open for 24 hours so we recommend that you don’t wear any makeup or products with fragrance for 24 hours. Redness in the skin appears immediately following treatment, and should relieve within 24 hours. You will feel dry on the second day – we recommend our TNS Recovery Serum for faster more efficient recovery!
How long will my microneedling results last?
We do recommend a series of three to five treatments spaced four to six weeks apart, followed by maintenance treatments every six-eight months for long-lasting results.
“Microneedling doesn’t ‘wear off,’ but it also does not stop the clock permanently,” says Dr. DeEtta M. Gray, a Bellevue, Washington plastic surgeon, in a RealSelf Q&A.
“After the treatment series, we discuss the best maintenance regimen for each individual patient depending on their skin type,” she continues. “I tell all my patients that taking care of your skin is like going to the gym. Once you stop, your body will eventually lose the results you once worked for.”
